Duffels, Backpacks and Briefcases: When Wheels Are the Wrong Answer

Wheels cost weight, volume and the part most likely to break. Where the crossover falls, and when a duffel, backpack or briefcase is the better answer.

Wheels are a purchase, not a feature

Wheels get treated as a free upgrade. They are not. Fitting a bag with casters, a wheel housing and a telescoping handle costs three things every time: several pounds of empty weight, a slice of interior volume taken by the wheel wells and handle channels, and the addition of the component most likely to break. A traveler pays all three on every trip, including the trips where the bag never once rolls.

The question is not whether wheels are good. On a heavy bag crossing a terminal, they clearly are. The question is where the crossover sits, and for a great many trips it sits above the load actually being carried.

Where the crossover falls

Two variables decide it: the weight of the loaded bag and the surface it crosses. As a rough working heuristic rather than a rule, wheels start earning their weight somewhere above twenty to twenty five pounds of loaded bag on smooth flooring, and stop earning it as soon as the route includes stairs, gravel, cobblestones, snow, unpaved ground or any transit station without a working elevator.
