Why Published Bag Dimensions Usually Exclude the Wheels and Handles

Luggage listings usually measure the shell, while an airline sizer measures the whole object. Here is where the missing inches hide, why spinners lose the most, and how to read a listing that gives two sets of numbers.

A suitcase can be listed at exactly the size an airline publishes and still fail the sizer at the gate. The usual reason is not dishonesty and not bad luck. It is that the dimensions printed on a luggage listing very often describe the case body alone, while the frame at the gate measures the object as a whole, including the wheels that stick out of the bottom and the handle housing that bulges from the back. What the number on the listing usually describes

Luggage is sold by a nominal size class. A case called a 20 inch or a 21 inch carry-on is being described by the height of its shell, roughly, and not by the height of the finished product standing on the floor. The measurement an airline applies is different in kind. A sizer frame is a box. Together they are the difference between clearing a frame and being asked to try again.
