The traveler and the trip
This is a three to five day bag for one adult, built for someone who wants the contents protected from the crush of a full overhead bin. Polycarbonate is the material to want in a hard shell: it deforms under load and springs back, it keeps rain out entirely, and it does not go brittle in a cold hold the way ABS can. If you carry a laptop, a camera or anything glass, a rigid polycarbonate shell is the meaningful upgrade over a fabric case.
It does not suit anyone who needs to reach a passport or a boarding pass without opening the case, because no hard shell has exterior pockets. What 22 by 15 by 9.5 means at a gate
An airport sizer measures the overall figure, castors included. The commonly cited United States domestic carry on allowance is around 22 by 14 by 9 inches. This case matches the height exactly at 22 inches, is a full inch over on width at 15 inches, and is half an inch over on depth at 9.5 inches. A polycarbonate shell has no give, so unlike a softside it cannot be squeezed into a sizer that it does not fit.
Samsonite’s own bullet says the case meets most carry on size restrictions for those traveling domestically, which is a scoped and reasonably honest claim. We are not going to restate it as a guarantee, because no manufacturer controls what a gate agent measures and no bag is approved across all carriers. Many carriers police the footprint of a cabin bag loosely and this case flies without comment. Carriers with a rigid sizer at the gate are a different matter, and on Samsonite’s own numbers this case is outside a 22 by 14 by 9 box on two axes.
The case also expands. Expansion adds depth to a bag already published at 9.5 inches, so a case that was marginal becomes clearly non compliant. Treat the gusset as a feature for a return leg you are prepared to check.
Shell, wheels, handle and locks

Four oversized multidirectional spinner castors handle the rolling. Oversized castors roll better over expansion joints, thresholds and carpet than small ones, and they are more stable under a full load. The usual weaknesses still apply. Castors are the most common failure point on wheeled luggage, they perform badly on cobble and gravel, and their exposed profile is part of why the overall depth reaches 9.5 inches when the packing depth is the same 9.5. The listing does not describe the handle at all, which is an odd omission on an otherwise detailed page.
The locks are side mounted and TSA recognized. Samsonite’s bullet says they act to deter theft, ensuring that only you or a TSA agent have easy access to your belongings. The first half of that is accurate and the second half overstates it. A TSA recognized lock opens to a universal key, and universal keys are widely available outside the agency. Treat the lock as a deterrent against opportunists and as insurance against the case falling open on a belt. Do not treat it as security, and do not check anything you would mind losing behind one, here or on the Samsonite Freeform or any other case with the feature.
Capacity, packing and a unit error
Samsonite publishes a packing dimension rather than a liter capacity, which is arguably more useful because it tells you the shape of the space rather than just its volume. At 19 by 14.5 by 9.5 inches the raw packing volume is roughly 43 liters, though a hard shell never delivers all of that, because the retracted handle housing intrudes into one half. Expect that half to be noticeably shallower and pack the bulky items on the free side.
The attribute block gives capacity as 6.81 pounds. That is the item weight repeated into a volume field, and it is a straightforward import error rather than a manufacturer claim. Take the packing dimensions as the real figure.
At 6.81 pounds empty this is light for a polycarbonate case with oversized castors, roughly a pound and a half heavier than the lightest softsides and two pounds lighter than an aluminum framed competitor. Empty weight counts twice on carriers that enforce a cabin bag weight limit, because the case eats your allowance before you pack anything.
Warranty, and where this sits against the field
Samsonite states a ten year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, and says the products are tested against internal standards. Ten years is at the long end of published luggage terms and it is stated in plain language rather than buried, which is worth something in a category where warranty wording is usually vague.
It is still a defects warranty. Airline handling damage is the standard exclusion across essentially this entire category, and handling damage is the great majority of what happens to a checked bag. A cracked shell from a manufacturing fault is covered. A cracked shell from a baggage belt very likely is not. Travelpro’s limited lifetime term is the notable exception in that it explicitly covers carrier damage for one year after registration, which is a narrower promise but a more specific one. Within Samsonite’s own range the Winfield 3 DLX is the closest polycarbonate sibling, and larger cases in the same construction sit under suitcases.
Who should buy it and who should not
Buy it if you want genuine polycarbonate rather than ABS, you value a published ten year defects warranty and a stated packing dimension, and your carrier is relaxed about the footprint of a cabin bag. The material, the texture, the oversized castors and the documentation are all a step above what this size class usually offers.
Skip it if your airline uses a rigid gate sizer, because at an overall 22 by 15 by 9.5 inches this case is over the common 22 by 14 by 9 allowance on width and depth by Samsonite’s own numbers, and polycarbonate does not compress. Skip it too if you need exterior pockets. And do not read the side mounted TSA locks as protecting anything of value.
